Just returned from a 10 night stay at this hotel. We were a family of 3 staying on an all inclusive basis. Hotel is approximately 40 mins from airport . Arrived just after 9pm, check inn was quick & easy. Once checked in we were told that we could head to the restaurant for a bite to eat which was what we needed after a long day travelling. First impressions of the hotel was that it was very clean and to be fair it was. There were cleaners constantly hard at work. We were allocated room 412 which was perfect for us. We had a lovely view and could see Maspalomas Dunes. Our room was a few blocks up from the swim up rooms. We only used one pool area which was the main pool, can’t comment on the other pools. Water was cold but once in it was fine. Animation team did an excellent job of keeping everyone entertained during the day from aqua aerobics to bingo. Animation team provided evening entertainment on certain nights and to be fair they put on some great nights. Entertainment that was brought into the hotel wasn’t the best. Hotel is located in a quiet area, only supermarkets close buy. Need to travel buy bus/taxi if looking for shops and bars and nightlife. Maspalomas Dunes is about a 5-10 minute walk and well worth a visit especially to watch the sun set. Few points to make note of… 1. 10 euro per person deposit needed for pool/beach towels. (This you had back at end of stay) 2. If you wanted fresh pool/beach towels there is a charge of 1 euro per change of towel. (Never been charged to change towels before) 3. Could have any branded drinks spirits but you had to pay for bottled water and all the ice lollies. ( found this a little strange as again always had bottled water & ice lollies included in an AI holiday) 4. We ate breakfast and evening meals in the restaurant, plenty of variety for everyone. 5. Lunchtime snacks we had from the pool snack bar again a good variety to choose from. 6. Self serve soft drinks machine and self serve larger. Also hot drinks machine and slush machine available at the pool snack bar. Plenty of people with their own glasses and water bottles filling up. 7. At the back end of reception there is a drinks station, cold drinks, larger on tap and hot drinks station. They also provide a choice of sandwiches. Would we stay here again….Yes we would and would recommend the hotel. Would advise not to read the bad reviews. We like to make our own mind up!!!

Gran Canaria - Ideal for November sunshine. Abora Catarina is situated close to the Maspalomas dunes and a short walk to the Yumbo. Our second stay here, check in was easy with staff friendly. Room clean, fresh bed linen, beds and pillows comfy. Bathroom acceptable, great shower. All inclusive - Breakfast is great, hot and continental options along with cereals, fresh fruit and pastries, didn't do lunch. Evening buffet was generally disappointing, there didn't appear to be any catering staff replenishing the various counters most nights which meant there wasn't a great choice of food available. Generally enjoyed our stay but some areas of the hotel look tired, corridor paintwork, floors, lifts etc considering this and the poor food and catering can't say it really warrants it's four star rating.

We’ve just returned from a week’s stay at Abora Catarina, which was our 6th visit. We like staying here mainly for the location. We have seen the hotel refurbished during our stays, but there are areas that are now looking tired. There are areas where floor tiles are missing/damaged, and a coat of paint needed in others. Room: We stayed in room 555 which has a great high scenic view overlooking the pool area. It is a decent size but again showing wear and tear in areas, especially the bathroom door, which is showing water damage. If we had any criticism of the room, it would be that the beds being on wheels pose a problem in that they move very easily, there is very limited storage space and bedside cabinets with drawers would be ideal. Also, in the bathroom the shower struggles to maintain equal temperature and fluctuates between hot and cold, and the shower tray is far too shallow causing water to overflow. Also, we are frustrated that there is an additional daily charge for use of the safe as we regularly have stayed in 3 star hotels where use of the safe is included as standard with the room. Restaurant: The food can be disappointing; it is generally repetitive, usually flavourless, and lukewarm. We tend to eat later around 8:30 – 9:00, and because of this there are certain dishes that run out that don’t get replenished. I fully appreciate that there is possibly a desire to not have too much waste, but surely an hour before the food service ends you would expect dishes to be refilled. On our first night, we watched as some of the catering staff were led around by a disgruntled guest so he could point out the depleted dishes that had run out despite an hour being left of food service. We hoped by the 2nd night things would have improved – unfortunately this was not the case, and we even contemplated eating out elsewhere at some point. Bar: It was very quickly realised that the glass sizes had changed from our previous stays, especially when served a beer, and you’re given a very small plastic cup which holds approx 2 good mouthfuls and is woefully inadequate to sit and savour a beer with. The cocktails which were previously handmade, are now premixed from a machine and sadly this means they are far too sweet and definitely not moreish. We sampled one cocktail each and didn’t have any more during our stay. Staff: We have to say that despite any criticism we may have of the hotel, there is no issue with the staff who we always find friendly. In particular our chambermaid Dayhara Ticona Hancco who introduced herself to us and we have never on any holiday ever met such a bubbly, chatty and friendly chambermaid who is so outgoing and entertaining. Also, we have to say how nice on our return visits it is to see Katia on the catering staff. We are always recognised on return trips, and she goes out of her way to say hello and make us feel welcome. Having stayed at Abora several times, we unfortunately are starting to see a decline in standards which is a shame, and ultimately may result in us choosing alternative accommodation when next in Gran Canaria
