In our experience we found this hotel to be a good 4 star hotel. Our first room was lacking in plugs, was a little gloomy and very close to the road so I would imagine it would be very noisy through the night. We moved rooms straight away and had a refurbished room. This room was bright and comfortable and we couldn’t really fault it. Housekeeping serviced the room each day and basically cleaned the basics, but not deep cleaned- dressing tables etc were not polished- some of my eyeshadow was always evident on the surface. Our room was noisy Friday and Saturday nights/ early morning as people left the casino night club. This could be improved if the hotel policed the people leaving a little. Breakfasts- these were ok. There was a decent choice, but lacked quality granola, jams, with that said- coffee was great. Happy hour- limited drink choices 5-6pm and then a service charge added. Didn’t like this! The pools were fabulous- plenty of beds, great views- no complaints here. Location- Perfect, great short walk into town either through the park or roadside. Would we stop here again. YES. We would be more specific with room choice. The price is good, location is great and the hotel itself is stunning.

We stayed here for Christmas and new year holidays. 2 weeks in total. Madeira is beautiful but this hotel is definitely NOT 5*. It's very tired and needs a good refurbishment. Our room 314, was full of dust, we had no toiletries or robe/slippers and no tea/coffee facilities nor a kettle, there was no mirror by the plug socket so I couldn't plug in my hair curlers to see what I was doing???. We requested a kettle on the first day and mentioned the dust. We where told that there was a waiting list for kettles and we would but put in the list!!!! This is meant to be 5 * and no basics like a kettle????. The second day we requested again a kettle and robes and again told that there where no kettles available at present and robes would be delivered. Come day 3, still no kettle nor robes now. The maid arrived to change towels and make the bed and we painted out the dust which still hadn't been cleaned, and asked her about the robes. She replied dusting was down to house keeping, not her and got her manager straight to our room. She was great. The dust was cleaned. The same day a kettle with cups etc was delivered. Robes and slippers delivered the same day too. A bottle of wine was delivered for their apologies, individual toiletries where also delivered. Nothing was done about the mirror though. The bed was huge and very comfy but pillows where too plump. Your head would slide off, or sore neck. One wasn't enough but 2 where too high. Head didn't sink into them. Most the staff where very pleasant apart from one of the maids who seemed to have a chip on her shoulder. Never smiled. The food was hit and miss. More so miss. We where half board. Breakfast choices where vast but the quality was lame. Dinner service was terrible. Food that should be hot was cold. Food was buffet style under lights which dried it out and not kept hot. Vegetables cold. Some foods where warm, usually Food in sauces. The deserts where the nicest part. But I wouldn't recommend going half board as there are plenty of close by restaurants to eat in. This is no where near 5* food. More like a 3. The indoor pool was meant to be heated. ??? Cold. The outdoor pool is only small so don't be fooled by the photos in the brochure. We had a side sea view. We where treated to beautiful sunsets from our room, but there was a constant humming noise from a ventilator or something . We requested more coffee sachets and where told its an additional 8 euros a day !!!! How can a 5 * charge more for this??? Never have it been charged for additional coffee. We bought more from the small super market just 3 minutes walk away. We loved Madeira but I wouldn't recommend this hotel. It's more a 3 * . No way is it 5*. If you do stay here, I would say just book room only.

Having been here several times in the past, admittedly the last time July 2019 I was shocked and disappointed at how this hotel has declined. It does not deserve it's 5 stars sadly. The rooms we stayed in were badly in need of refurbishment and updating. One bathroom was covered in black mould, we complained to reception and they sent someone up to regrout it within an hour. Now what does that suggest? The hallways and passageways were dirty and dusty and the bedrooms and bathrooms were never cleaned to a good standard and the beds never made properly and any attention to detail was sadly missing. The breakfasts were good and plenty of choice which was the hotels saving grace, being served between 7.00 am and 11.00 am. Staff were lovely, friendly and accommodating. Now if you want quiet undisturbed sleep do not have a room overlooking the front of the hotel as it is also a few yards from the entrance to the Casino. The disco which is situated within the casino starts up at about 10.00 or 11.00 pm and always very loudly to the renditions of Bruno Mars "Uptown Funk". Now I am quite partial to a spot of Bruno Mars but when it starts just as you are trying to get to sleep it can be a tad on the annoying side. Then whilst in your quiet slumbers the casino closes at 4.00 am and it apparently takes the lovely revellers almost an hour to say goodbye/goodnight. The noise is as loud as the lovely Bruno Mars but not as tuneful. Finally the main road has got so busy and has cars and bikes racing along it until all hours. The hotel is anything but a quiet and peaceful place to stay. The treatments at The Spa are overpriced, however the massage I treated myself too was very good. Not sure if I enjoyed my stay or not but definitely won't be going back.
