Superb hotel with an easy 30minute stroll in the city centre. Our room on the 7th floor had a good sea view, was spotlessly clean and well maintained, and the room service lady did a great job every day, freshening things up and replenishing things as required. There's a lovely sunbathing area on the 5th floor terrace with sunbeds and Bali beds available at all times of the day with a pool that was never busy. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis and found that we never had to queue or wait for a table . The food always looked fresh, there was lots of variety and it was well prepared. The staff throughout the hotel were friendly, helpful and generally went out their way to make sure the guests had a great holiday. There is nothing to dislike about this hotel and I know that we made a great choice in choosing the Alto Lido for our first holiday in Madeira.

The Alto Lido is a lovely hotel with a few flaws, rooms are good and the staff are all tremendous however the food let's it down. The Alto Lido is a lovely hotel with a few flaws, rooms are good and the staff are all tremendous however the food let's it down. Avoid all-inclusive, breakfast is good however lunch is very poor, hamburgers and hotdogs every day with some other unlabeled items, dinner quality is good but the choices can be limited, for the first time we ate out 3 times and we are not fussy eaters. Also the dining room was very crowded and chaotic at times as a large number of tour groups use this hotel, similarly the seating in the bar was very busy with all the seats quickly occupied, so don't go out for a after dinner stroll and expect to have a drink afterwards.

A group of 10 of us stayed here at the end of September. Overall we liked the hotel. The breakfast was great but did get quite busy at certain times but there was always lots of choice and frequently being replenished. We had a side sea view room on the 9th floor facing towards Funchal. Some of our other group had them facing the other way and were also great views. Rooms very light and spacious for 2 people. Would have been good to have a bit of a better dressing table area and more hooks to hang bags / towels etc…. Disappointing there is no milk provided with the tea making facilities - even if just a couple of the UHT pots to have your first drink on arrival. We did buy milk from the local shop and kept in the fridge provided though. Also the cups in the room were like shot glasses so if you like a decent brew take your own travel mug and also note they didn’t provide a teaspoon so had to ask for one downstairs at the bar! If you want to iron anything then good luck. Apparently if you book with jet2 holidays you’re not entitled to one but it depended on who you asked because later in the week some of our group got an iron eventually and then randomly, despite not even asking for one, one appeared in our room! One morning we ordered a take away breakfast as we had a sunrise walk to get to. The male night porter was very rude to several members of our party and wasn’t very professional. We were also provided with glass bottles of water and juice which was not ideal as we were going on a long hike so carrying glass was not suitable. One of the lifts (left side) was very unpredictable and often broke. The lifts are too small and if you are caught in the breakfast rush you could be waiting ages. Not ideal. Pool area was nice and clean and never too busy. We didn’t use it much as we were often out and about exploring the island. The indoor pool was slightly warmer but not warm enough for me. We did want to use the sauna but were advised we needed to book it! The hotel did seem to get much busier around the weekend so might have been a place for people to go for long weekends. We didn’t use the shuttle bus to Funchal but if you head across the road to the Pestana Promenade hotel you can catch the no2 Bus or grab a taxi for a reasonable price. There is a sister hotel - the Baia Azul - which we didn’t visit but looks nice and would consider staying there next time.

We had a good stay at this hotel! Our room had a sea view which was stunning and was very spacious and clean. The indoor pool was impressive and the staff were very nice! There are lots of bars and restaurants in walking distance and the beach is 25 mins walk away. Not too far to walk into central Funchal and taxis were cheap! We paid 60 euro to park the hire car here for the week which we would recommend as on street parking is hard to find and always busy. We were disappointed by the quality of the breakfast - the hot food was not great, very sloppy and cold, but there was a good range of other foods - breads and pastries etc. We did not use the outdoor pool much as it was quite crowded and the seats did not surround the pool - you were just looking at the snack bar, but the pool itself was very nice. Overall a really good holiday but a few bits that let it down for us.
