“Lovely break”

Brilliant hotel. Lovely people and excellent service. Christmas Day gala dinner was a bit chaotic, but every other day was fabulous. Will return.

Fantastic holiday at the Riu Madeira hotel. We stayed over Christmas for 10 days and had the most wonderful time. The food at the hotel is brilliant. Plenty of choice and all very tasty. There was never a day when I was disappointed. Probably the best all-inclusive hotel I have stayed at for food options and consistent high quality. Our hotel rooms were huge (our party of 5 were on the top floor across three rooms). We all had great sea views, large comfy beds, plenty of space and excellent bathroom facilities. Balcony is very spacious too. The room has the usual coffee and tea making station, safe, ample storage for suitcases and hanging space. Rooms all have a TV and extra bedding. Our rooms also included a sofa and coffee table. Felt like an apartment. Staff are really friendly. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Great service in the main dining room. Tables cleaned quickly, attentive waiting staff - always filling up your drinks and checking you are enjoying your meal. Entertainment is OK. Some nights were better than others, but we always made the best of it. Participating when able to and dancing until the music stopped. We would have liked a bit more in the way of entertainment on Christmas night. A disco/Dj or more live music through the night would have been welcomed. It all stops at 11pm. Hotel location is great if you like to be out of the way from the hustle and bustle, but also within fairly short distance from Funchal where all the fun seems to be! Free shuttle service is handy and local bus service also very good. Bus timetable available from reception. We travelled with TUI. Our rep, Gene was very helpful and friendly. We attended the welcome event and followed his recommendations for some of the tours. We particularly enjoyed the Northwestern Jeep tour. Highly recommend it if you are looking for something fun to do during your stay.

Run, don't walk to book this hotel ! Everything about my stay was excellent! The rooms are spacious, newly renovated, and have walk in showers... Everything is spotless! The food is excellent, and there is something available at any time of the day! One bar is open 24 x7, so great for drinkers..There is entertainment every night! The only downside of the hotel is that it is somewhat isolated...There are courtesy buses into Funchal, but the times are limited, esp the returns..There is also a bus stop directly across from the hotel entrance, but I did not explore that option..The heated outdoor pool was also a great perk....I would return again without hesitation!

Nice hotel, shame about the food. Hotel is immaculately maintained and the staff were excellent, however the main restaurant is buffet only and the food was often only lukewarm or cold. After 2 weeks the available choices were very repetitive and the quality of some dishes were questionable. The "gourmet" restaurant is only available to book on one occasion during a stay. The food here was good but quite a limited menu. Evening entertainment was not worth attending and amateurish. The pool area is nice with lots of sunbeds and a snack bar but again, similar food to the main restaurant. Not really a family hotel as there isn't much here for children; it would be better as an adults only hotel. Free shuttle bus to Funchal 3 times a day is very good. There isn't much to see in the immediate area around the hotel so hiring a car for a few days was a good idea. Get into Funchal first thing (8-9am) to avoid the mad queues for the toboggans and the cable car before the passengers get off the cruise ships. I would rate this hotel as just about 3.5 to 4 star.
