I found it intriguing how the hotel has been built into the ancient citadel, resulting in a quirky layout to the corridors, some of which slope up and down. Most of the bedrooms, the breakfast dining room, spa and indoor pool are on the first level up from the main entrance and reception. Breakfast was very good, with a wide selection, and served from 7am every day, which was important for us, until quite late if you prefer a lie-in. The indoor pool is small, but big enough for a bit of exercise, and is kept at a nice temperature. The outdoor pool is in a sunny but secluded location, although being unheated I was not tempted to try it in February, not did I spot anyone else around there, although I imagine it would be popular in summer. Not everything was perfect - the knobs on the wardrobe doors were small and tricky to grip, and the TV was fixed to the wall too close above the desk surface, but those are minor niggles amongst an overall great holiday experience. The best thing about this hotel is the staff, who were some of the most welcoming and helpful I have encountered anywhere.

The location of the hotel is perfect, between the marina and the town. The rooms were a good size and quiet. Breakfast was very good. All the staff were excellent. Friendly, helpful, efficient. On departure when we told the reception staff that we had a long car journey, they provided food, water and snacks for our 2 year old (and some for the adults!). They were extremely helpful. Definitely coming back.

Reading some of the reviews of the hotel, I visited with trepidation. However, my experience of the hotel was exactly the opposite. All staff members that we came into contact with, were friendly, helpful and very efficient. The room was excellent, and okay, some of the areas are a little tired, but nothing that would allow me to criticise the hotel for. The breakfast was one of the best that I've seen in a 5* hotel. The food in the Taberna da Praça was excellent, and the atmosphere in this dining venue was really good. The hotel is in a superb location, almost in the heart of Cascais, but in a quiet spot. If you want to try tourist food, hit the main restaurants around the centre of the town, with the menus in a number of languages. However, if you want to try local restaurants, where local people dine, then go to Rua do Poco Novo. We tried Manjar da Villa, Melody, A Nova Estrela, and our favourite, Terrosso. All extremely reasonably priced, with a great selection of food and wine available. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel, it was a very special place to visit and stay.

The staff of this hotel was really great, but for a five star hotel it was definitely lacking some things. For instance, there are no modern outlets or places to charge American cell phones unless you brought an adapter. Also, several of the carpets need to be replaced because they are definitely stained. The beds were a little hard, but we can deal with that because that’s just personal preference. The location of the hotel is excellent though. It’s nearby the city center, and also the cliffs where we hike to and saw some beautiful views. The breakfast was very well done and had anything anyone could want.

“Nice hotel, just let down but a few little details”
I don't often write reviews, but feel compelled to do so about this hotel because it could just be so much better than it actually is. It's lovely hotel. The staff are nice and friendly. I don't often write reviews, but feel compelled to do so about this hotel because it could just be so much better than it actually is. It's lovely hotel. The staff are nice and friendly. Our room (249) was nice looking although it would have been nicer to have a seaview as the hotel was clearly not busy. However, the shower was pretty awful with little pressure and really slippery over the bath with no shower mat. The TV remote did not work either. The air conditioning didn't work and even though we mentioned this, it was never fixed. Breakfast was ok, but again the service was very hit and miss. On one occasion we got our coffee after we had finished, on another I had to go an ask for it which was a bit annoying. As I say, nice hotel but it just felt that it wasn't very well run. It could be so much more with just a few little changes.
