My wife booked a last minute winter sun break for us and to be honest looking at some of the reviews it was in the back of my mind that it was off season and if it really was that horrific we could find somewhere else in the area quite cheap. What a surprise when we got there. I'm not sure if they have had a massive clean up of their act or what but there were no strange smells in the apartment, we barely noticed the small gypsy camp across the road, the place was lovely and clean (OK it was very basic kitchen but we were on holiday and ate out a lot), the pool was small but nice and clean. As for the beds, I have slept on much worse beds in hotels that have cost a lot more per night. They charge extra if you want your towels changed through your stay and they offer a wash only laundry service for €10 a load. At the end of the day you get what you pay for. But I liked it here and would go back again, it's just a place to sleep, you want more go to a hotel and pay more

You get what you pay for. Everything you need bath, big tv and big balcony. All mod cons. Very comfortable and clean. Yes you are 20 minutes walk from beech and restaurants but we knew this beforehand. Shop 10 min walk. Pool was lovely. Great value for what we paid.reception staff v friendly

The apartment was budget, clean and fit for purpose. It was small, had a balcony over looking the pool which offered a good sun spot..... I can not fault any of that. The WIFI is also free and very good We had issues with the water going off once, issues with the lift not working twice. Not good if you struggle with mobility and have to climb 6 or 7 floors . Also the apartment block is actually a residence for many, who have their pets. We got woke up at 5:30am by a barking dog next door, and the same couple shouting. Again their smoking not only filled the hall with a stench, but we also got it out on the balcony as well..It was quite sickening The reception staff were also quite cold, and could have been more friendlier. It seemed as if you were a burden to them or they simply didn't want to know. But the big drawback is location. This is not situated in a tourist area, it's actually in the middle of a residential area , that we found somewhat dodgy at times. A lot of graffiti and a gypsy camp actually facing the apartment block. The gypsies gave us no trouble, but they were very noisy at weekends , with loud music and laughing going on all Friday and Saturday night. The gypsy camp also has a rooster, and every morning between 4:30 and 5am it would start....and it doesn't stop. So be well warned on that one We also went to put our rubbish out, and were confronted by a very angry man, who seemed to have issues with the apartment block, and where it's staff had told us to put our rubbish. He was quite threatening and abusive.. When we complained at reception we were told to ignore him.. UBER was our saviour. We got taxi's out every day and home again, door to door.. Alvor is a lovely part of town as is the Marina in Portimao and the beaches.. But the main town of Portimao is dirty, busy and heavily graffitied.. Not really a pleasant place. There is an ALDI and Lidl close by as well as a shopping centre.. Take an Uber into the AQUA Shopping centre, it's massive and well worth a visit, as is the fish market. In all, next time we will book a hotel closer to the tourist areas, and maybe go all inclusive. By the time you pay taxis, pay for you food, carry it home, cook it, bring out the waste, bla bla bla....it's not worth it. If you are on a strict budget it might suit you, but transport is the issue if you want to to the tourist thing. The number 14 bus is perhaps the closest and easiest way to get about apart from Uber, but I wouldn't have felt comfortable standing at the bus stop close to the apartment. So UBER was the only way.. We spent 9 days there, and it was too long...I wouldn't go back. Sorry
