Riad Etoile is a lovely hotel for your stay in Essaouira. The location is excellent, in the medina a few blocks from the harbour. Even with its central location, it was VERY quiet at night. The staff are all welcoming and very kind. The internet is good, and the price is great. I booked a week here,and ended up staying 3 weeks!

Authentic, rustic and charming is how I would describe this riad. The staff Kavira and (queen) Latifa 😂 are more than accommodating. Just ask and they will do all to help, French speaking mainly but they can converse in English a lil bit. Right at the end of the Medina it is quite and the locals know them very well so it is safe I highly recommend if you are in that neck of the woods. Again, I say the staff made the experience more than pleasant. A true well spring of local information,they provide a map with details for the area, they even tell you how much the taxi will cost from the coach station so you don't get ripped off. “Nice place”

It took a bit of effort to find this place, but it’s a challenge to find anything in the medina when you first arrive. Just keep asking directions, the locals will help you. It took a bit of effort to find this place, but it’s a challenge to find anything in the medina when you first arrive. Just keep asking directions, the locals will help you. We were welcomed very friendly and helpful. The rooms are very spacious and clean, and is was surprisingly quiet in the evening. After a good night rest we had a wonderful breakfast on the rooftop. And all of that for a great price. I can definitely recommend it.

On my first visit to Essaouira I had no idea of the standard of accommodation and chose this mid-price riad for its location and from previous reviews. First of all, the location is perfect, right in the middle of the medina and easy to find. Initial impressions were that it needed to just be a little brighter and maybe get a fresh coat of paint. Check in was quick and friendly. The attractiveness of the staff made for an even better welcome. My room was on the second floor, up two flights of steep steps, not quite as steep as those in, say, Amsterdam, but a close second. There are handrails, thankfully. My room (9) was a double, and had all that you expect in a basic room, with no unnecessary frills, which I liked. It was quite dark, and the low wattage bulbs didn't help to brighten the place. There was a small, double-glazed window opening out onto the street. At night there was no noise. What there was, though, was some extreme cold!! There isn't any heating in the building and, the first night, I had great trouble sleeping. The next day I asked for a blanket and this was lying on my bed when I returned that evening. It helped in the remaining days, although I needed to be be buried quite securely in the covers to stave off the icy draughts of night air. It's probably very cool in the summer. The bathroom was, again, basic, with a fairly standard home-issue shower head which didn't really do the job unless you converted it to hand-held. The hot water was constant, though. Towels were clean but looked grubby - they could do with being replaced. There were fresh towels every day. Breakfast was, as you'd expect in a hotel, a bit samey, though served with great friendliness in the rooftop area. This was an ok place to eat, although there isn't really a view and there are windows on all sides. Food was a M'smmen pancake,a pastry and basket of bread, all served with honey, jam and butter. One day I didn't want the bread and was given a Beghrir pancake instead, which was a nice substitution. Coffee was nice and there was the option of mint tea instead. Standard fare for a hotel of this type and quite acceptable. The rooftop space also serves as a smoking place as there is no smoking in any of the rooms. I've stayed in riads in Marrakech and these have all had open roofs which makes for a very different ambience and airiness, although with it being very chilly in the evening, i guess having a closed in roof was a good thing in this case. I'd rather an open roof and some heating. Overall, this was an ok place to stay, but be aware that there are probably nicer, warmer places in Essaouira at the same price. It didn't ruin my holiday, but I wish I had chosen another riad. C'est la vie and all of life is learning.
