Overall our stay as a couple was pleasant and would possibly return in the future as it would be familiar. A massive positive to our stay was the quality and variety food at the buffet restaurant and the Asian restaurant, the feeling of welcomeness and safety in the area as well as being able to have the opportunity too book many fun activities outwith the hotel through our travel company/hotel rep. However, two things I would have preferred we’re different would be, the pool swim up bar (I felt this area was unhygienic and had a bad smell) and the hotel evening entertainment 1. Didn’t start early enough (kids entertainment lasted too long) and 2. Was not good quality entertainment ( felt forced to participate is very out of touch awkward *entertainment* games that’s also finished too early 11pm. Given the kids games finished around 9.40-9.9.45) otherwise our stay was pleasant enough. Positive and negatives • appreciated the small 5 min walk the the beach •appreciate that the hotel is 5 min walk from pharmacy/cheap 7-11 general store/souvenir shops •good central location for many excursions the area • the special a la carte restaurants didn’t feel very special as menus were very limited and the experience felt too busy and felt rushed ( better off at rosa roja buffet restaurant) • decent gym facilities • quality of alcohol in the hotel is very is poor (personally expected better from a 5 star restaurant not sure if this is due to my first time at a 5 star all exclusive resort) • sports bar has poor quality lighting (too bright feels awkward) • terrible 24 hour snacks in the sports bar • check in on arrival took way way…way to long (terrible 1 desk service for 30+ arrivals) • pools too warm/not cold (not sure if this can be helped to be fair) • A/C in room is good standard • Daytime/pool/entertainment is good and consistent • Room maintenance was top tier (rooms/beds made every day) as well as fridge soft drinks/alcohol topped up every 2 days the same with 2L bottles of water

We stayed as a family of 4 at the end of June to beginning of July. We booked it as an extra celebration during a very special year for us. Firstly, obviously it’s a bloody long flight from the uk and the waiting around at the airport to get through customs is a bit ridiculous. We weren’t expecting to have our bags rummaged through either before leaving the airport so be prepared for that! The bus journey was fine and the drop off was the second stop. The reception is lovely, big and impressive. I left the men collect the suitcases and got in the queue to check in which was a brilliant move. Check in was ok and we found our rooms easily. We were in block 0 and were impressed with the cleanliness and size of the rooms.The bathrooms were spotless, the only issue was a lack of privacy when showering which may be awkward with families. Thankfully we had 2 rooms and put the teenagers in the other room but they weren’t happy with the bathroom situation. Our block was next to the main building so didn’t have far to walk for the restaurant. The food was pretty good, every night a different meat or fish being carved. As with every all inclusive it can get a bit repetitive but there was always something enjoy. The taco’s are obviously amazing and funny as it sounds we discovered some fantastic soups! I have to mention our waiter Gustav, I’m sure his feet don’t stop moving! A great guy, always topping up our glasses and making us feel very welcome. We didn’t try any of the a la carte’s as our teenagers liked the main restaurant and are fussy eaters. The beach is a few min walk away and was a welcome sight. We enjoyed visiting yucutan, the first time the pools were lovely and cool but the second time they were not looking very clean and had horrible green scum marks around the edges so we didn’t go back again as I got it on my arms and back. We spent most of our time at the quiet pool at tequila which like most people have said is very warm in the afternoon. We didn’t see any arguments or drama in the swim up bar but did see a young woman being lifted out after overdoing it. We didn’t go to any of the entertainment really as we were exhausted by the humidity. We did force ourselves out of our comfort zone and go to the white party and we really enjoyed it, the hotel was packed full and everyone was enjoying themselves. We lost the day after but that was our own fault…….too many aperol spritz, but it rained all day so wasn’t an issue. Also the silent disco was brilliant fun so make sure you go! So, to sum up. If you are going to the Riu Tequila thinking it will be a luxurious Caribbean holiday you may be disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, every inch of the place is immaculately clean and well kept but it’s not what I would call a luxury holiday hotel. Sat by the pool I could have been anywhere in the world and to be honest I’ve been to more impressive hotels in Europe with beautiful views and surroundings. The staff at this hotel work extremely hard and are very friendly but I was a little disappointed that our ‘special’ Caribbean holiday didn’t have the wow factor I was hoping for.

We had a wonderful two weeks at the Riu Tequila. The staff are wonderful, particularly Polo who looked after us in the buffet. The speciality restaurants less so. The Asian was the best one. We didn't enjoy the mexican restaurant at the Yakatan unfortunately. The staff were great over the hurricane day and offered a lot of reassurance. The pools are good and you can usually get a sun bed. The rooms are comfortable and the cleaners do a great job. Good variety of entertainment (despite the rain on a few occasions). Cheap to get to 5th Avenue but avoid the chemists as they are hugely expensive. We loved Senor Frogs (lively and good fun, good food), the Greek restaurant was amazing but expensive. Coco Bongos was as mad as it sounds but good fun (food dreadful, drink plentiful) worth a visit.
