“Best staff in Mexico”

Just returned from a fabulous 14-night stay at the Riu Palace Mexico. Check in was nice and smooth with a nice refreshing fruit punch on arrival. All the reception staff were helpful, had to have the room key re-set on 3 occasions, even though we kept this well away from any electricals. Emailed the hotel to ask for a quiet room, and we were given a wonderful room with a huge balcony. The staff are what really make the difference at this hotel, I would be writing for hours if I was to mention ever member of staff who went above and beyond their normal responsibilities. I think a few members of staff deserve a mention because of the hard work and making the difference from it being a good holiday to a GREAT holiday. On the lobby bar serving drinks to everyone is Elena, who is an absolute work horse, she honestly never stops. Omar in lobby bar is an asset to the company, working hard to keep everyone hydrated. You can not forget to mention the wonderful RIGO also on the lobby bar, he is an absolute character who keeps everyone entertained all night, it wouldn’t have been the same holiday without him. Pastor serving drinks at the pools was always rushing around to keep every topped up with drinks. Luis Pool in the buffet restaurant was a Tasmanian devil, removing plates, pulling chairs out for ladies, setting tables, getting people drinks to name just a few things he was doing every second, while always smiling deserves double pay. Thank you to each and every member of staff we came across, you all truly do make a difference. The lobby bar in the evening had a pianist on, who was wonderful and played some nice background music and actually did some requests for people. Food in the buffet was fantastic and always plenty of choice. Guacamole at lunch time was a superb setting overlooking that unbelievable beach, the food was superb like the view, with lots to choice from. Only tried the steak house from the a la carte which was good most nights, had the fillet (3 nights) but unfortunately we had a really bad steak one night which was chewy, which a fillet should not have fat running through it. Overall had a fantastic holiday with my wife, but we will be looking for another hotel in playacar next year as this hotel is really starting to look its age now and needs some serious money spending on it. Workmen are working all day to hold it all together, they just seem to be covering the cracks by sticking a plaster on it till it fails again. We will still go with the Rui chain again just not this hotel, which is a shame because we will miss the staff we have got to know over the last couple of years.

Good stay at the end of October as a family. Good location for reaching places like xcaret, xel-ha but chichen itza was a bit of a trek. Lovely beach, great sea swimming. Playa Del Carmen was a short taxi ride away from the hotel, about 2km if walking (or running!). Entertainment was decent (that which we watched). Several of the bars were actually too cold (with max Aircon) to sit in at times. Due to the time diff to UK it was actually quite difficult to engage in the entertainment, wanted to go to bed at 8pm! We enjoyed ourselves, staff were good and friendly. For me, this wasn't perhaps completely the luxury experience I might have imagined and the hotel probably is on the verge of needing a "refresh", having been there I think about 20 years. Rooms are a bit peculiar with the "exposed" bath and the corridors are a little shabby in places. Door keys were a bit of a nightmare and we had to get our reprogrammed at least 5 times There were issues in the 48h before we left after extremely heavy rain and various leaks springing in the roof. Didn't affect us but in the corridor outside. Buffets were on the whole good, but didn't quite reach peak level, never had any issue eating though. We thought the steak restaurant at the beach was the best in the evening (went twice). The other restaurants were average-to-good, particularly, strangely, the mexican one which was a bit of a disappointment (the fajitas weren't served properly, without wraps and sauces)
