The beach is incredible the staff was very friendly and great at providing service and attention to our needs. The food was very good!Rooms are spacious with mini refrigerators and a safe. There is a 24 hour self serve coffie bar with pastries and sandwiches aswell.

The staff and the beach make this place a must visit. Roberto and Erica at the fish taco stand will make sure you are well fed and always have a drink in your hand. Saul and his fellow bartenders make anything you can think of and can suggest some you probably haven’t heard of. Niko, Kimberly and Clemente have you covered for Breakfast, lunch and dinner with local dishes as well as American fare like burgers and pizza.I apologize as I know I’ve missed So many more people that were awesome too. We can’t wait to go back!

“OK for the first time but not a 5 star, I want to rate this as a 3.5Star,... against other resorts we've been to”

We booked the Mia Reef for 8 nights/9days while seeking all-inclusive options on Isla Mujeres, and based on TA reviews felt this report would provide what we were looking for.… more

The wife and I have vacationed with friends for 15+ years, mostly the Mexico west coast along with a few Caribbean resorts. We booked the Mia Reef for 8 nights/9days while seeking all-inclusive options on Isla Mujeres, and based on TA reviews felt this report would provide what we were looking for....beach time, good food with decent meal selection, clean, good rooms and beds, good service (we're not high maintenance), easy access to the town. Resort: Is clean and the service staff are very friendly and attentive. Portions of the resort have been remodeled while some areas are showing their age and effects of being exposed to the environment 24/7. I'd organized the trip for us and another couple working thru one of their on-line reservation reps, who confirmed for us Deluxe Ocean View Rooms (shows with King or 2 x Double beds) ,...because of my back, I requested a king bed with a room facing the ocean (north). While our friends got that very room, we were assigned a south view room with a queen bed , immediately over the roof of the resort reception, with the AC unit operating continuously 15 feet below our room....we were able to get relocated the next day to the 8th floor, facing the ocean (north) but with a queen-size bed,,...so not with a bed option as advertised, and which made for some restless nights. The rooms are clean with some remodeling/upgrades (bathroom). Mini-fridges were restocked daily with a good selection. If shorted something, a quick call had this corrected quickly. Hot-water, or lack of, was an issue maybe twice. Be cautious about going onto the patio....siderails are poor quality and not solidly secured. The beaches are great, very powdery white sand and the water crystal clear and shallow,...very suited for casual floating or snorkeling. There are ample loungers, like most resorts it requires getting out maybe early to stake out the loungers. Not sure how people justify complaining about "no loungers when I went down there"...its' pretty simple if on day 1 you see you might need to get down to the beach before 11 to stake out some loungers, just do it. As noted in other reviews, there are many "reps" seeking your time that the time-share pitch can be presented. I/we we happy that not once were we approached,...perhaps because during my bookings I made it very clear we were not interested in sharing our vacation time with any time-share sales effort. Not sure, but we never approached so never had to have a conversation that was not going to go well for the time share sales rep. Amenities: view this as a boutique resort with a few activity options...kayaks, paddle boards. The advertise bicycles but limited entertainment or socializing amenities. The bar is outside of the main building, modest entertainment in the evenings but no where to go if wanted to sit in a quiet lounge to relax, play cards, chat. Coffee bar in the lobby...a pool table and 3-4 gathering tables but too far from the bar service to consider it as a quiet lounge. Food: The Sarimar,...buffet,.... has a very good selection of meats, potatoes, vegetables, fruits,... with chefs at the grill who cater to your specific orders. The floor staff in the buffet (with service to the tables outside) were very friendly and great at their job. Access to and service at the bar was good, same with the service at the beach including being able to order food and have it delivered to the beach...this iks very nice touch not available in many resorts. The Blue Moon Snack had tasty burgers, dogs and fries during the mid-day, while one could The a la cartes...there were 2 to choose: Las Marias (in the main building) was a disappointment. 3 of the 5 main course weren't available and what we had was bland or below average. I think the other was called Cevicheria (below the VIP lounge)....this was excellent,...every selection was very flavorful and filling with good service from the staff. The large outside lounge area was under construction....not noted when looking to book. This made for a temporary bar operation which did OK,..not often line-ups and ordering thru the servers was usually very timely. My score of 3 would be 3.5 (above average) when we compare across the board to other resorts we've stayed at (from 2.5 star private owner to 5 star Int'l resort chain), and based on amenities as advertised versus those experienced. And in most cases, my final assessment is based often about those small details that are being ignored, I only assume by Management, since it appears the primary driver is to secure time-share clients. I've always seen Cancun as the "wanna-be Vegas" of Mexico,....more expensive but in high demand because so many vacationers want to go there and willing pay more than necessary so they can be "someone else". From Edmonton, we have limited competition with Westjet having a near monopoly on the direct air travel to the region and thus no deals exist looking to travel here. While also being an island, I expected Isla Mujeres to also be "expensive" when compared to west coast vacation spots. Yes, in town shopping and bars/ restaurants are more expensive than the west coast...$16-18CAD / $12-13USD for a basic cocktail in most bars . Yes, renting the golf carts or scooters, in town, to tour the island is very fun and somewhat relaxing. We did find a great scuba dive shop in town (Aqua Eco Dives..see review) as there's good snorkeling and diving around the island. AS noted, in comparison to other vacation spots and looking at amenities promoted versus what was experienced (versus RIU, Occidental, Barcelo, Las Brisas)... this is a decent 3.5 star resort. I feel, in general, we paid too much for what we got, compared to the many other vacation places we've be. Set your expectations accordingly.
