“Honeymoon”

We stayed at Excellence for 2 days before transferring over to Beloved. They share the same beach but the vide is different. Beloved is more peaceful and romantic which was perfect for our honeymoon. The Tacos were amazing as was the facilities and staff.

We stayed here for five days and we had an incredible time. Guadalupe at the taco stand was very approachable and his service was excellent. We wish we would’ve had more tacos! Jesus the Sushi chef made us feel very welcome. He was very attentive to our needs. He made our last dinner at the resort extremely memorable! Overall great services all around. Food was delicious. Will definitely be returning.

I feel like every time I read a less positive review of a place that has stellar reviews, I'm always skeptical of it, but please trust me that I am trying to give a well-rounded and accurate account. We stayed at Beloved 5 years ago and it was basically perfection. We had an amazing time. Based on that, I wanted to go back. Unfortunately, our stay this time was not up to par. There were some good things and some definitely not so good. Excellent: Service. The service remains very good, the staff is well-trained and attentive and kind. Shout-out especially to Aline the mezcal sommelier, Fernando, Mex, and Antonio. Additional shout-out to Guadalupe at the taco truck. That guy is fantastic and his food is delicious! Mixed: The food and drinks really varied this time. The French restaurant was outstanding. We ate three times at Lupita Steakhouse and the quality should have been better for a 5-star resort. I'm not saying it was bad by any means - the Argentinian bbq platter was very good, but just not the outstanding quality you should expect for the level of resort. The Mexican night was okay - my husband really enjoyed his meal while I was less pleased with mine, but that may have been personal choice. Our "romantic dinner" (just putting in quotes because that's what the resort called it) was very good. The fish tacos from El Mar were excellent, and the pizza we got delivered to the beach was surprisingly good. I also tried the grilled mahi-mahi at El Mar and it was just okay. The Caesar salad at La Trattoria was very heavy on the dressing, and the shrimp tasted like they were small, frozen shrimp and not the quality I expected. The pesto gnocchi was fine but the sauce was extremely oily. The room service food was pretty terrible - we tried a number of items two different days at different times, afternoon and evening, and none of it was good. The mozzarella sticks tasted very strange, and the French fries were terrible - bland and fried too hard, and cold. The chicken fajita had virtually no seasoning. I frankly make much better chicken fajitas at home. The drinks we got at the beach and pool were also extremely variable. The margaritas and mezcalitas were excellent - well mixed. I also thought the mango tango and the blue Hawaiian were good. Other drinks we ordered were so light on the alcohol that I felt like nothing was there - and I'm a light drinker, I don't even like much alcohol. Separately, and I recognize this may not be anything the resort can do, but the pools were practically too hot to use, especially the first couple of days. I know they've had a severe heat wave which was clearly affecting it, and maybe there are water restrictions that have not allowed them to add fresh cold water. If this is not the case however, they need to find a way to adjust the temperature. We were grateful for some thunderstorms that cooled them down a bit. I will praise the hotel for not over-chlorinating the pools. They were exceptionally clean while not having that chemical smell. The sports/recreation area also needs some work. Last time we stayed we had really enjoyed using the pool (billiards) table and it was in good shape. It looks like they haven't done any maintenance or replacement of anything in the last 5 years. The pool sticks were so worn that they were practically unusable, and one day they were missing for an hour and we had to repeatedly request the staff to help, which was only finally resolved when the resort manager herself came down with the sticks from her office, even though they should have been at the table. Pool sticks are cheap and there's no reason for a high-end resort to have poor equipment. The table is also really worn and there should be a cover on it or something to protect it when not used. I also can't figure out why both times we've been there, the "Natura" bar by the recreation area is closed and clearly not used. Bad: Both my husband and I got serious GI distress. We did not leave the resort, and the symptoms did not start until halfway through our stay. Six days later, I am still having problems and have to go to the doctor. There are only two causes of what we're experiencing: either contaminated water, or improper hygiene and food handling by the staff. Either answer is completely unacceptable for a 5-star resort. We did not drink the tap water, but it is possible that we contracted something while brushing our teeth, or the ice at the resort is contaminated. Otherwise, it must be that the staff is not using proper hygiene. This is extremely concerning and disappointing either way. We had zero complaints the last time we stayed at the resort and did not do anything differently this time. Overall, while we did make some good memories and parts of our stay were relaxing, the overall visit was marred by these issues.
