“A memorable week in Eremo Della Giubiliana”

Wonderful experience booked for 3 nights and stayed for 7! Staff were excellent helpful and friendly. Rooms were extremely spacious comfortable and clean. Wonderful experience booked for 3 nights and stayed for 7! Staff were excellent helpful and friendly. Rooms were extremely spacious comfortable and clean. A highlight was the superb and gorgeous buffet breakfast which we indulged in every morning wow it was terrific! Of course we met Gianna who was responsible for us staying on she has an infectious character and is a huge asset to this amazing boutique hotel. Overall a huge thank you to all at Eremo Della Giubiliana we shall be back!

LOCATION: The first impression as you arrive is the beauty of the hotel itself. Set amongst gently sloping fields, roughly 1 km off the main road from Ragusa to Marina di Ragusa, the Eremo is a beautiful honey-coloured stone house built around a central courtyard with many branching passageways, smaller courtyards, arches and gardens (including one with flowing water channels based on an ancient Persian design, "qanat"). Newly built extensions and repairs have been blended in perfectly with the older parts. It is a pleasure just to explore around the grounds or sit soaking up the peaceful ambience. ROOMS: Inside, the Eremo has been carefully modernised, keeping and enhancing the historical character. We had a suite made up of a sitting room downstairs, bedroom upstairs with large terrace, and also a roof terrace with views all around. As we got to know the place, we quickly realised that almost all the rooms are different - this is not a purpose-built hotel with "standard" rooms and "upgrade" rooms. Tip: when booking, spend some time looking at the details of the rooms so you get the one that suits you best. SERVICE: The staff were warm and friendly at all times. We quickly got to recognise them, and they showed that they knew us too. For example, when we ordered food or asked them to take something to our room or call a local restaurant for us, they knew our name and room number without asking. FOOD: The food is excellent. Breakfast has a wide range of food types, including English style "cooked breakfast" eggs and bacon, but most options being local Sicilian cuisine: roasted vegetables, cured meats, savoury pastries, sweet pastries, local cheeses, fruit, and sometimes treats like panna cotta. The photos we saw online when booking don't do it justice. Tip: get there early because not everything is replenished. On several days we saw coach parties who had stayed 1 night and were grabbing an early breakfast before heading off to the next stop, with the effect that some food choices were gone within the first half hour of breakfast. The Eremo is very proud of its restaurant, and rightly so. Local culture is to eat a large main mean quite late in the evening which isn't our preference so we only ate there once, but the quality was excellent. Tip: book ahead, because they do get booked up with those coach parties and other tourists staying locally. OVERALL: So why not 5 stars? Well, if you spend any time at the Eremo you will see the owner wandering around. It seems he has a skillful eye for establishing a great hotel, but he is not a warm or friendly host himself. We have been to places where the owner greets guests with a warm smile and open heart, making paying guests feel like personal guests. Unfortunately the owner of the Eremo is not this kind of owner. We had a few interactions with him, which generally left us with the impression that as he sees his paying guests as necessary but that he would prefer to ignore while he enjoys the Eremo himself. One particular incident occurred when we were woken at 6:30am by loud music which we tracked back to his private rooms. When we complained to him, he did apologise, but we were left feeling he should have known not to do this in the first place - the Eremo is a peaceful retreat from busy city life, so loud music at unsociable hours is not what guests are expecting here. So despite the owner not being particularly welcoming, the staff are fantastic and the place is beautiful and peaceful. We loved it.

The hotel has many plus points. The buildings are really stunning and the public areas (restaurant, lobby/lounge, gardens, swimming pool) are very beautiful - tastefully designed, immaculately maintained, beautifully lit at night. However, the room itself had two major flaws. The bed was rock hard - essentially just a board with a hard thin mattress on top. I did not sleep at all the first night. When I mentioned it to reception the next day, they immediately added an extremely comfortable memory-foam topper. It seems extraordinary that I had to request a proper mattress in order to be able to sleep in what is, after all, supposedly a five-star hotel. The other issue is the bathrooms. They were clearly installed a very long time ago and are tired, stained and extremely old-fashioned. The shower over the bath was virtually unusable - a weak dribble of water, impossible to control the temperature. In short, the bedrooms need serious investment to bring them up to the standard of the public areas of the hotel. Alternatively, the hotel should be reclassified appropriately as three star or similar. The restaurant was excellent - a beautiful room with a great menu and attentive staff. I got the impression that the hotel relies on American tour groups and thus has a successful business model based on offering a night or two in a historic former monastery, rather than providing a comfortable place to stay for longer. One other thing - you are very aware of staying in a private home, with a small team running the hotel (all of whom clearly worked extremely hard). That is not a negative point - just an observation (and the owners' dog is very sweet).
