Hotel Scapolatiello is quite unique, created by a family in 1821 and currently run by the 5th generation of the same family. It is in a fantastic location in forested mountains above Salerno with majestic views. The rambling building has several terraces with lots of flowers and it is a soothing and pleasing experience to sip a cocktail provided by the friendly and obliging barman, Antonio, to relax, and just gaze at the natural beauty all around. We found the staff to be helpful and smiling and felt we were being well taken care of. A special mention also to the head waiter Abel, who went out of his way to ensure everything was to our liking. There is a nicely laid out and good sized swimming pool with ample deckchairs and towels and a small bar. The restaurant is slightly old-fashioned, with a relatively short but decent menu, in addition to which there were always specials such as sea bream, sea bass, lobster, spaghetti with utterly delicious tomatoes, and steak. The wine list is extensive and affordable. All in all, we loved being there and it was a lovely experience. On one night singers from the Conservatoire at Salerno gave an impromptu performance in the lounge area, which was magical. The only excursion arranged for us by the hotel was a trip along the beautiful Amalfi coast in a motor launch with another couple, with a one hour stop in Amalfi and a longer one for lunch in Positano. Ten minutes walk through the town’s winding streets takes you to the unexpected Abbazia della Santissima Trinita, a monastery fronted by a huge baroque church. A prearranged tour takes you through medieval and ancient cloisters and catacombs, all under an immense overhanging cliff face.

“Great hotel for R&R”

A beautiful hotel in the heart of the mountains close to the Amalfi coastal area. We stayed for 2 nights and didn't feel the need to leave the hotel. A beautiful hotel in the heart of the mountains close to the Amalfi coastal area. We stayed for 2 nights and didn't feel the need to leave the hotel. The hotel has a small spa area and we were able to book treatments for the same afternoon after our arrival. The pool was a good size with plenty of sunbeds and other seating , and also a small bar. The restaurant (Locanda 1821) serves a fabulous breakfast, and lunch and evening meals were a fine dining experience based upon seasonal, local specialities. If you don't have the use of a car, a taxi is probably advisable to get you to the hotel itself. This would be especially wise for anyone with mobility issues. If you do have a car and it is of a moderate to large size it will be easier to park in the larger carpark on the lower level.

“Nice views, beautiful grounds, dates rooms, smelly bathrooms, terrible coffee and mediocre food.”

Stayed 3 nights on a hiking trip. Nice staff, beautiful grounds, great views, nice pool, dated rooms, bathroom smelled like sewage, the coffee/cappuccino was undrinkable cheap swill, and the food in dining room was mediocre (although deserts were pretty good). Visited in October. Weather was very nice, hotel was quiet. A couple of large bus tour groups but not many other people.
