This hotel is fabulous. It is made up of individual studio apartments comprising of bedroom, decent sized bathroom with large powerful shower. They also each have a little covered patio area with a hob, microwave, fridge and coffee maker. We stayed in superior studio number 5, which was just up the slope from reception. There are some apartments further up the hill which I suspect had a sea view but we had lovely trees and plants around us so there was plenty to look at and listen to. As others have said, some of the walkways are really steep (as is lots of Basse-Terre) so it might be worth mentioning when booking if you have mobility issues. There is WiFi throughout the hotel and in your room. The air conditioning and fan a god send! We were booked on a bed and breakfast basis. Breakfast had everything you wanted, hot or cold, delicious fruit juices and fresh fruit every day. There are fresh mangoes everywhere! We booked a table and ate at the restaurant a couple of times. Fairly reasonable though I did struggle with vegetarian options - there was really only one. I found this in a lot of the restaurants in Deshaies actually, which was a little disappointing and repetitive. We didn’t use the pool, but it was meticulously cleaned every morning before opening. The gardens are fabulous and again maintained very well. We saw lots of lizards, humming birds, and the cats! I’m a cat lover so it was wonderful watching the kittens playing. They do all like to beg and you are discouraged from feeding them. Grande-Anse beach is a few minutes walk away. It is quite a steep shelf so on some days there was quite a wave for playing in - just something to be wary of if you have smaller children or not a strong swimmer. Most of the time it was flat calm. There are a couple of restaurants there. There was also a little takeaway booth next to Les Hibiscus that served bokits and fries and chicken, which was handy if you just wanted a snack. Most of these were closed in the evenings. We hired a car and travelled quite a lot of both sides of the island. I would recommend this. We visited Plage de la Perle beach (where the inspector’s shack is, if you are a Death in Paradise fan) and preferred this somewhat to Grande Anse. There were a few more restaurants open, and it was less crowded so more shade! The weather was very hot and quite humid at times with a couple of really heavy downpours. This in turn brought the mosquitoes out, and my husband and I were bitten quite badly, even with the bracelets and spray! We noticed lots of others nursing nasty bites too! Possibly the time of year. Take your plug ins if you have them! We didn’t and I regretted it. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Helped to have a little French but their English was very good. They helped with our car hire and booking a boat trip. There is a young chap, unfortunately I didn’t get his name, whose English is very good - far better than my French. If you are Death in Paradise fans, some of the cast and crew stay here at this time when they are filming. We did meet a couple and also saw some filming in the town. We did walk to Deshaies a couple of occasions during the day time. I’m not sure I would want to walk the road at night. If I had any negatives at all it was lack of storage space in the room! One wardrobe and two tiny drawers! Just meant our room was a little messy by the end of two weeks but it didn’t take anything away from the hotel or our holiday. If we are lucky enough to get to Guadeloupe twice, we would definitely stay here again. It was perfect for us.

Hotel is made up of studio apartment rooms with an outdoor kitchen dining area, including fridge, stove, coffee maker etc. that was great as we could do our own breakfast or have water / wine beer kept cold. The room was clean and basic and had a separate bed area for our son, which worked well. Plenty of hot water for shower. The hotel is in beautiful gardens and well kept, and is on a steep hill side. Several languages are spoken at reception, including English, but generally English is not widely spoken in Guadeloupe - helps to have some French! The Plage Grande Anse is about 250m walk, and is great.. loads of waves and beautiful beach. It is a public beach so you need to bring your own towels, beach chairs etc. Parking is very busy so it’s good to be able to walk there from hotel. There are a good selection of restaurants and bars with excellent food, and very French service with fixed price menus that give you 3 courses and take about 3 hours. Good on the island is good with a French creole taste. One thing we noticed is that most restaurants serve a big meal in the lunchtime or afternoon and are closed in the evening. So we mostly got tapas and wine in the hotel in the evening after eating lunch at 2-3pm. Most restaurants in Deshaie need a reservation for dinner service, they get very busy. Guadeloupe is a beautiful green island, with lots to see, and strongly recommend renting a car. The taxis are almost impossible to find and expensive, so rent a car from the airport for the whole trip. It cost E85 for a one way airport transfer and only E37 per day for a car rental. Recommend visiting the botanical gardens, eco zoo, and hiking in the mountains, and the rum museum. If you have time hike the waterfalls and volcano - but this needs a bit of research and planning to find the information in English. We never managed to get into the cocoa house, as they needed reservation in advance and it was fully booked.

“Great stay at HGA”

Excellent stay at HGA. The location is excellent, just across the road and up the hill from Grand Anse Beach (less than 10 minute walk). “Awesome Stay”

We stayed at HGA for two weeks in a second floor suite with an outdoor kitchen on the terrace. Everything was as advertised in a very beautiful setting. Staff were extremely friendly: reception, cleaning staff, and gardeners. All friendly and eager to help. The pool is probably the cleanest we have ever been to, this can also be said of the rooms, which were well appointed and comfortable. The air-conditioning was efficient and quiet, kept us cool on some very hot nights. Grounds are well kept and there was constant work being done to maintain them. The kitchen had everything we needed for a simple meal, which was nice after a day of being out, we just wanted to dine in on the deck. We are Death in Paradise fans and we were lucky to bump into a scene being filmed and had our picture taken with the lead actor. Short walk to the beach and to a gas station/store that had most needs. Overall, we had a great stay and would highly recommend this establishment.
