“Best Summer Beach Break for stress free relaxation.”

The one week we spent at Arina was one of the best holidays so far. My wife and 11-year-old daughter had a very relaxing and sun-soaked fun-filled break from the dreary British weather. We booked a Superior room with terrace facing the sea, on the first floor. This was amazing. We slept with the ... more

  • Guests at Arina Beach Resort say: The one week we spent at Arina was one of the best holidays so far. My wife and 11-year-old daughter had a very relaxing and sun-soaked fun-filled break from the dreary British weather. We booked a Superior room with terrace facing the sea, on the first floor. This was amazing. We slept with the terrace door open, to the sound of the sea. The hotel is located less than 30 minutes from the airport and on a bus route to the city of Heraklion and the airport... The staff: they are all amazing - from the cleaners, waiters, chefs, entertainers, spa assistants, life guards and, the barmen/barwomen. They all work incredibly hard, tirelessly for long hours on their feet, and are always smiling and willing to make you comfortable. I became friendly with the bar staff: Albi, Irini, Yanis and my best friend - Costas, who is the star of the show. Food: Great selection. The buffet at Ariadne, the main restaurant is always well stocked with a wide variety of food. There are special themed dinners. My favourite was the Cretan Night. I cannot comment on the desserts, as I never had the opportunity to eat them, as I was l aways full after salads/starters and main. Fish, seafood, chicken, red meat, vegetables, pastries, breads; they were all delicious. If I have one advice for the chefs - it would be to put less salt in certain dishes. The Avra a la carte restaurant was OK. The Dia bar by the beach was brilliant as for lunch, most times it was easier to just step in there from the pools or beach to get lunch (deconstructed gyros, burgers, salads, pizzas, burgers, chips, fruits, drinks, etc...) instead of going all the way to the main restaurant. The Sunset restaurant looks nice, perched high on the hotel grounds. They have a selection of sushis and dumplings - we could not try them as we could not fit it in our schedule. Some of the drinks are watered down, like the beer on tap. This is fine as it is too hot to drink strong beer. The Cretan wine on tap was too watered down in my opinion to be enjoyable. Coffees at the bars were brilliant, as were the cocktail selections (I purposefully requested my friends at the bar to make my cocktails weak (who wants to get drunk early in the morning?). The kids love their slushies and mocktails. Pools: there are 6 of them. The main pool by the restaurants and bar, where you can also play water polo. Then there is the indoor spa pool for relaxing, reserved for adults, next to the gym. The heart-shaped pool is nice and warm (salt water) just by the centrally located rooms. The pool with slides is the most popular, in my opinion. This is for adults and kids. Next to it is the 'baby pool' for younger children. Last but not least, the small pool by the Sunset bar, again for adults only. This was my best place to relax. Facilities: gym is small but great with dumbells and some machines, including stationary bikes (no bars for heavy lifting - this is a vacation, remember?) Sauna and steam room are both brilliant. I did not try the massage as these are pricey and time consuming. There are enough sun loungers and deck chairs for everyone, I felt. Entertainment: Kids clubs for young ones (I would say aged under 10). Football and volleyball games on the sand on the east side look great (I ould not make time to join in though). The main man, Galin, and his colleagues do a wonderful job for the kids entertainment every evening at 20:00 h. After that there is a themed evening, all entertaining though they tend to end a bit earlier than expected (this is a family break afterall). You can snorkel and swim by the east end, near the volleyball court, though this part does not have lifeguards as it is just beyond the hotel grounds. I saw beautiful fish there when snorkelling. This part used to be a harbour centuries ago it seems. Entertainment: I feel one week there was not enough. I did not manage to snorkel more than once. I did not play football, volleyball and water polo. I did run on the sand and did some stretches in the early mornings, went to the gym to lift and cycle a bit, and also went to the steam room. We also went on two day trips (Santorini and Knossos followed by a wine tasting in Melesses) and a short trip to Heraklion local market for souvenirs and Cretan speciliaties....
