there were pictures of cute bungalows in a lovely garden on all web pages and catalogs, so we booked one for our holiday this year. We were surprised when they gave us a room in a building above an Italian restaurant, some 30 m far from the E75 highway (Chania - Rethymno). We couldn't even guess this building was a part of the hotel. The window of the room faced west, so there was as hot as in a stove in the evenings and the air conditioning could be switched only when the key was in the scanner inside the room. We couldn't open the window due to noise from the highway and couldn't sleep with AC switched on because the stream of cold air blew directly on our heads. After two days of permanent complaints, we succeeded to change the room. Sleep-deprived and totally upset we finally got a room in one of the bungalows. The rest of our stay was fine. Kind people (esp. Maria from reception), a beautiful beach just beside the hotel, tasty food, a jeep safari, and trips to near towns and places of interest (from the bus stop a couple of steps from the hotel) nearly healed us from our traumatic experience. If you have got good luck with your room, you can experience really happy days.

A strange little hotel. Note that we were the only English people there, and the German clientele may or may not be your cup of tea, as they have their unique quirks! It depends what you're after from your holiday of course, but here are my thoughts: Pros: - A lovely welcome and check-out experience from the girl on reception. - Very clean, spacious, and modern rooms. - Some beautiful flowers and plants which were well maintained. - Brilliant beach. Sea very warm for swimming and always lots of sunbeds - some of the reviews mention the stones but these weren't a problem, only when you're getting in and out of the water. - Mountain views and stunning sunsets. - Great fridge in the room and air-con for keeping things chilled. - Good location with a bus stop, supermarkets, bars, and shops just across the road - Nice breakfast: I particularly enjoyed the fresh omelettes, which were always served with a smile. - The manager, who was mid-conversation with someone when we checked out, made a point of approaching us to shake our hands, which was a sweet touch. Cons: - The smell of sewage in the restaurant was at times, unbearable. You have to put all your toilet paper in the bin so I can only guess not everyone obeys the signs and the drains are struggling. - Repetitive and often very salty food. I'm not a fussy eater and will eat most things but we had to go out a couple of times to eat, as we were all-inclusive and got bored. The more traditional options like moussaka were the tastiest. We didn't try the a la carte restaurant because we weren't keen on paying for drinks when we were already all-inclusive. - Noise in the evening from the adjacent French hotel, and in the daytime on the beach from the Italian hotel (not a problem for us but some might find it a bit much). - Disengaged bar staff. One girl in the main restaurant was very standoffish all the time, even though we tried to smile and be friendly with her. Vivien was excellent though and deserves a mention. - The hotel is very quiet in the evenings - there's the odd event but it's the exception rather than the norm, and one night the bar closed well before 10 pm. When there is an event on they close the pool bar, which means everyone is pushed into the restaurant area and you can't have as much freedom over where you sit to eat. - The layout is bizarre, with another hotel in between the two main areas. There's a lot of wasted space (for example in the reception area and behind the main pool), and I feel the hotel would benefit from having more of a central hub where people can come together. There's a beautiful terraced area out the front, leading off reception, which would make a gorgeous bar - The shower lacked power and we sometimes struggled to get hot water in the evenings. - No blackout blind or curtain on our window which let quite a lot of light in the room. - Drink options were limited (and possibly watered down?) and we were disappointed to find the cocktails were ready-made, out of a pre-mixed bottle. No option to have bottled water, so we had to buy ours from the supermarket. This wasn't our main holiday, it was a bonus getaway at the end of summer, so it did the job. But I think I'd have been disappointed if it was my only opportunity for a break. If you're after a cheap and cheerful holiday to sit on the beach and swim in the sea, I'd recommend just going half board or bed and breakfast here and heading out in the evenings for some nightlife (there was a brilliant cafe across the road with live music, and some brilliant tavernas and cocktail bars). If you want a quiet hotel where you can just have a couple of drinks and maybe play cards in the evening, you're all set. Because there are more pros than cons here, it sounds like we had a terrible time, but we made it work by getting out and about in the evenings and because the beach was so lovely and the room was good we did have a nice time. I think if some of the negative points could be addressed though, Happy Days could really shine.
