“Lovely, spotlessly clean hotel, great staff, superb snorkelling”

My partner and I have just returned form a week in the winter sun at Steigenberger Coraya Beach at Marsa Alam – what a fantastic hotel and resort. We flew from Gatwick, and the flight was 5 ½ hrs, it’s probably best described as medium haul but probably the closest you can get 25degC daily from the UK in December without going far East or West. Marsa Alam airport is not very busy – a total of about 20 flights per day (including internal flights and cargo). At the moment there is one flight per week from Gatwick with TUI. Even though only a couple of flights had landed when we arrived it was chaotic at the airport with people being ushered into lines to buy the $25 visa – we already had bought them and could have gone straight to Customs – but that wasn’t clear at all. Once we had cleared multiple checks we were met by the rep and shown to our transfer. The transfer to the resort took about 10mins – fantastic. Including a stop at another resort. On arrival welcomed by the team and very efficiently given a brief into and then taken to our room. Room itself was nice with a good sized, comfortable bed, and a balcony overlooking the gardens. There was a nice large bathroom with complimentary toiletries, large walk-in shower and a small minbar with soft drinks and water, also complimentary. The water was replenished every day and there was also a splendid towel sculpture, and a small box of sweet treats left every day. Being German branded most of the guests were German with a few Dutch and even less English. It’s an adult only hotel and most guests are couples averaging from their late 40’s to their 80’s. Many of the guests we spoke to had been here repeatedly over the years. All the staff spoke good English and wherever we went we were greeted with a smile. The hotel is well established with beautiful gardens, and it is spotlessly clean everywhere you go. We ate in the main buffet every day apart from the one night at the A La Carte – which was very nice. You can also book at the A La Carte in the neighbouring hotel (Steigenberger Alaya) as well – but book early as the slots go. Dress code for the evening meal for men is compulsory trousers and covered shoes – for the ladies, no bare midriffs. During the day shorts, t-shirt and flip flops are fine. We ate outside every night and the temperature was just about right – as the evening wore on a light jacket or cardigan was needed. Some of the guests were wearing puffer jackets and scarves – but I guess different people feel the cold differently. Food was fantastic – we had absolutely no complaints, varied every day with different themes in the evening. However, I am not sure how many people have chill-con-carne for breakfast, but it was there each morning! When you arrive in the main dining hall there were always staff available to say hello and welcome you, a nice touch, and every morning, there was a A4 printed news summary in various languages available, another nice touch. We did not use the SPA or GYM whilst there, but we did use the SAP facilities to shower and change after we had checked out, as we had a full day in the report. They will extend the checkout to 2pm if you ask nicely or 6pm for 40EUR. The hotel has three pools, 1 heated and 2 not – we didn’t go in these but just used the heated one, as it handily also had the swim up bar. There in no annoying music playing all day, but on a few afternoons, there were live singers for an hour or so – and they were of decent quality. Entertainment in the evening was a 30-minute show in the amphitheatre, this is not something I usually enjoy but the quality of the acts used was excellent and we went every evening. Also, they have a resident singer whose range was incredible, and he always managed to get loads of people up dancing. There were also a few evenings with small groups playing instruments. All the entertainment was high quality and catered for the guests well. There was also a small entertainment team working tirelessly throughout the day, whether it be boules, learning Arabic, Tai Chi, aqua aerobics, all delivered with a smile. And whilst you are enjoying the entertainment the waiters are constantly bringing drinks. The hotel is set on the shore of a small bay and even if there are red flags flying for the main sea it always calm and safe enough to swim in the bay. Pools towels are provided and are changed daily and are delivered to your room in a bag. There are plenty of sunshades down at the beach and the staff will always help you. The sea can be entered from the beach – which is sandy, and you do not need swim shoes. Or you can walk down the small jetty into the water. Next to the jetty there are foam noodles to prop you up in the water (great for snorkelling) and a couple of shelves to keep you sandals and sunglasses on, a nice touch. If you like snorkelling, it is fantastic. All around the edge of the bay is a shallow reef, this is protected by buoys and rope, so you swim along the edge of the reef. We saw a wide variety of colourful fish which you can identify from the large poster on the beach. We were lucky to see a turtle, lionfish, puffer fish and a moray eel. As you swim out of the bay the drop off gets deeper, but you are always a few feet away from the rope. For the more adventurous there is scuba diving, which can be organised through many of the local dive centres, with trips to local attractions We did not dive but a few of the guests we spoke to had been diving daily and absolutely loved it – in the diving world this place is well renowned. We found the snorkelling was better in the morning when the bottom was less stirred up but the further out of the bay you go the cleared the water becomes. In summary – lovely, spotlessly clean hotel, great staff, superb snorkelling. We rarely go to the same place twice, but this hotel is worth it - we are already planning next year’s trip.
