We have been to the Senator 3 times and plan to go back again. Not sure what the negative reviews are about? We found the check-in to be a great and fast experience. Robin and Michel at the check-in are fabulous and very much happy to assist you. The rooms are a bit tired, but they are clean. If you are staying in your room, stay home. The weather is usually great, but this year, we had 3.5 days of rain. We made it through the bad weather by playing cards and having snacks/drinks in the sports bar. The pool, and beach are very lovely. Yes, the pool could use a little upgrading, however the water was clean and we enjoyed it. The buffet was clean and the food was delicious. There is always something for anyone's pallet. The staff at the buffet work very hard and are so pleased to serve you. We went to the ala-carts, they were ok, but we prefer the buffet so we can choose exactly what we want. We found the wifi to be very good in the rooms and through out the resort and actually reached out to parts of the beach as well. So to sum it up, go see for yourself. We are heading back again in October 2025. Special shout outs to: Buffet: Luigi - Omelet bar - wonderful guy! Loves making your omelet everyday! Ferriera - he is an amazing server! Danersa - she is such a sweet gal and very attentive! Julian - great, just great! Juan Pablo - whistles while he works! Incredible worker! Sports Bar: Kristi - simply bubbly and very good server! Erika - great server! Ariel - fantastic person! Maria - manager of sport bar - couldn't do enough for us - awesome person!

During my stay at Hotel Senator, Blacky, one of the animators, truly stood out and made my holiday unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, his energy, enthusiasm, and sense of humor created a lively and welcoming atmosphere. He made sure that every guest, no matter their age, felt included and engaged in the activities. Blacky was incredibly versatile, organizing a wide variety of events, from games and competitions during the day to entertaining shows and parties in the evening. His creativity and passion were evident in every activity he hosted. Whether it was a fitness session, a pool game, or a karaoke night, Blacky ensured everyone was having a fantastic time. What made him exceptional was his ability to connect with people on a personal level. He remembered guests’ names, preferences, and even small details about their families, which made interactions feel genuine and heartfelt. His positive energy was infectious, and he never failed to put a smile on everyone’s face. Thanks to Blacky, my stay at Hotel Senator was full of laughter and memorable moments. He is not only a talented animator but also a wonderful person who truly cares about making guests happy. I would highly recommend Hotel Senator, especially for his outstanding efforts.

“Honest review: pros and cons, beautiful resort, great amenities, poor service to guests.”

We stayed in end of december 2024january 2025. We are students, we each paid ~2.3K for the trip on our winter break, feels very reasonable for the time and location of the trip, overall feeling very happy. There were pros and cons to this resort; however we overall had an excellent time. There are some key areas lacking in order to call this a 5-star resort. Preface: we took $250 USD to the resort intending to tip all of it andor spend the remains. We only tipped $70 USD in 7 days; not for a lack of generosity, but rather disappointing service levels that did not deserve a tip. To me, this says a lot about the service we received. We are generous tippers, specifically so when visiting the Caribbean region. Both previously had serving experience working at wineries and within service industries in Canada, so I feel this provides some empathy in regards to my thoughts on the service. PROS - The resort is only 40 min from the airport. - The entire stretch of the beach belongs to the resort (and sister property), and the beach is beautiful. - Surrounded by short mountains on all sides--makes a beautiful backdrop. Beautiful outlook in the ocean. The resort is pretty much. - Everything in the room works: hot water, cold water, AC, WIFI, phone, safe, TV, plugs etc. (note: newer rectangle Apple blocks do not fit the shape of the outlets. Bring the old square ones!) - The resort is a bit on the smaller side (IMO) which was nice and comfortable - The resort is very clean - The 24-hour food was great at the sports bar! (long wait). CONS - Smaller premium alcohol selection compared to other resorts - basically had one brand ('classico') that encompassed every type of liquor... was not good. - Food was repetitive at the buffet -> Not bad, but repetitive. - Service at the buffet is abysmal, and in the most honest form: practically laughable. 2/3 time we did not receive water, any service or cutlery. This was the most frustrating part of the trip because the bare minimum was not met at the only place to eat. - Food anywhere but the buffet was a long wait. we only ate at one ala carte (italian) and spent 2 hours there for an appetizer and main course. we left before dessert as it had been a while since anyone came to see us. - Staff overall were less friendly. In previous resorts we've stayed at, by the end of the week we have built up relationships with housekeepers, bartenders, baristas etc. Something felt different at this resort - there were times we were outright ignored, or brought up concerns about how long food was taking (45 minutes for a chicken burger) to be told 'you're not the only people here'... turns out they missed our order. :( "I'll check on it" or "shoot sorry, want another drink while you wait" is more appropriate. This was not a make or break, but a noticeable change. Incredibly difficult to get beach or pool chairs. By 9 AM most days, EVERY chair at the pool is taken. Our trick: put out your towels late the night before. I totally understand that service standards are different in the DR vs what you expect in Canada: however, some elements of service are expected at a "5-star" resort. These did not ruin the trip, but they made us feel tricked into thinking we were staying at a resort of higher calibre than we actually ended up. Compared to other resorts I have stayed at (Barcelo Maya Grand Resort, Grand Bávaro Princess etc..) there are certain parts of the guest experience missing that service could have made up for... something for management to work on. Overall we had an excellent stay and would possibly consider returning. The resort is truly beautiful, the drinks were good and the sun was shining. Other than these *KEY* components of a 5-star resort we had a great time. Service is typically not a concern at a 5-star property.
